In our ongoing effort to have healthy hair, there is one critical ingredient that many people underestimate...the consumption of WATER!
If you are going to make the mental, financial, and emotional long term commitment to regrowing and strengthening your hair, it is important that you're also prepared to increase your daily water intake.
Water makes up approximately one fourth of the weight of a strand of hair and when hair has the proper amount of water, it will respond by being vibrant and silky. Drinking the proper amount of water, along with the proper nutrients , will have a tremendous impact on your skin and nails as well. Many of our clients ask how much water is enough on a daily basis?
Notice what a report from the University of Iowa stated about the need for proper hydration:
"Drink 6 to 8 eight-ounce glasses of water, or other fluids, or half of the body weight in ounces each day as part of a healthy diet. It is important to limit how much soda, caffeine and alcohol you drink. Soda contains sugar and empty calories. Caffeine and alcohol can cause the body to lose water. You may need to increase your fluids if you are exercising or spending time in hot or humid weather. Men usually require more water than women do because they have more lean muscle. Persons taking certain medications or with some chronic diseases may have to restrict their water intake. Well...the consensus among health professionals seems to be 1/2 of your body weight in ounces."
In other words, if you are a woman weighing 120 pounds, an adequate amount of water would be 60 ounces a day (120 divided by 1/2 is 60) So if you want gleaming lush and healthy locs, braids, dreads, and natural hair, water is absolutely essential!
Always remember this:The human body is generally composed of approximately 60-80% water. When the body is deprived of adequate water to sustain reproduction and cell health , the body becomes dehydrated, which directly impacts hair growth, healthy skin and nails.
